Best Cook

My mother was the best cook. I remember her cooking before we had what was called a "cook stove". She cooked on top of a cast iron heater that was heated with wood, using cast iron cookware. Mama made biscuits and gravy, fried chicken, pinto beans, and cakes.

Mama's cakes were not cooked the way they are today. They were more like thick pancakes. She put fillings of jelly and various fruits between the many layers and on top. She called them "stack cakes". Definitely, old fashioned cakes!

As times progressed, so did mama and her cooking. She became known in the community for her good cooking. She had good food and plenty of it!
